Our schools would love the support from the community to provide new socks and underwear for students in our high needs schools in Charleston including: Burns Elementary, Chicora School of Communication, Mary Ford Elementary, and Sanders-Clyde Creative Arts School. Students are ages 3 - 10. Small and X-Small are most requested, but we appreciate all size ranges up to Adult Small. Decal/Sticker Removal for Charleston's Historic/Tourism District
City of Charleston

From 11/19/2021 to 11/19/2021

Keep Charleston Beautiful is seeking volunteers to assist with a project beautifying Charleston's downtown historic and tourism district. Volunteers will be removing decals and stickers from various surfaces along roadways using our scrapers, and adhesive remover. Stickers and decals currently deface our street signs, post office boxes, utility boxes, light poles, trashcans, etc. This small act of vandalism greatly adds to the unkempt appearance of our City thoroughfares, and removing them will be a step towards beautifying these public spaces. We may also have volunteers work to clean graffiti from these surfaces as well (supplies provided).

Foster Family Basket Drive for Closet of Hope (Remote)
Closet of Hope

From 10/18/2021 to 11/19/2021

For the upcoming season to be thankful, the team at Closet of Hope is thankful for foster families. The entire COH team sees how hard these foster parents work, how much they change their life, and the pain that they encounter because of being a foster parent.

We want a way to just say thanks to these amazing people in our community.

Foster family baskets are a way to just supply a few household items for the entire family as a small token of our appreciation. Each basket can be a laundry basket, with a few items inside such as laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, and other household items along these lines.

This may seem like a small thing to do for another person, but some of these families have more than 10 children in their homes and a small gift of this nature, can help just take a little bit of pressure off of them.

Toy Drive for Closet of Hope (Remote)
Closet of Hope

From 10/18/2021 to 12/08/2021

Partner with Closet of Hope to raise awareness to the foster care system and support a child in foster care! Closet of Hope focuses on supporting children that are involved with DSS through tangible items. The toy drive last year supported over 300 children in the Lowcountry area. This helps ensure that these children are able to have a happy holiday.

How it works: Our annual toy drive will be held on December 10th and 11th. Foster parents will sign their child up in advance and then be able to come to Church of Cane Bay. All of the toys will be out for display at this time and the person shopping selects the toys that the child would enjoy the most. There is a point system to ensure fairness for all foster families throughout the event. All donations would need to be received by December 8th for processing!

Fields to Families Moncks Corner Garden Day of Caring Virtual Wishlist (Remote)
Fields to Families

From 10/14/2021 to 11/19/2021

Fields to Families gives produce to programs feeding the community by coordinating volunteers with farmers for the collection and distribution of fruits, vegetables and eggs.

Fields to Families believes that every person deserves access to healthy food choices, no matter their circumstances. The organization helps combat hunger by bridging the gap between local farmers and the food insecure.

Volunteers are coordinated, provided resources and guidance for cleaning, growing and giving produce received by food donor. The organization's methods allow for donated produce to be strategically collected and dispursed at no cost to the community partners. Activities are offered throughout the year in the organization's Moncks Corner Community Garden. They include growing seasonal crops from seed to harvest, building and constructing, raising honey bee hives and a sprout house.

Volunteers will need to collect the books to donate to KNCB and then coordinate a drop off at the KNCB office. If desired, volunteers may also purchase books from KNCB's book wishlist and they will be shipped directly to the KNCB office: https://a.co/9Jrs2LV

Collect Cardboard for our Pollinators! (Remote)
Keep North Charleston Beautiful Coalition

From 10/14/2021 to 11/19/2021

Keep North Charleston Beautiful uses sheets of cardboard as a natural, compostable weed barrier in gardens. This allows us to cover weeds in the gardens in a way that does not harm the pollinators. Cutting down the cardboard into smaller pieces prior to any volunteer activities allows volunteers to work more efficiently during workdays.

We need volunteers to collect cardboard and cut it down into smaller pieces for us to use in the gardens. The smaller pieces will then be bagged up and need to be delivered to the KNCB office (located in the Felix Davis Community Center at 4800 Park Circle, North Charleston, SC 29405).

Create Thank-You Bags for Volunteers! (Remote)

We are looking for a group of volunteers who can donate the snacks and candy for these volunteers (and pack the candy into small Ziploc bags—snack or sandwich size) to donate to KNCB. Favorite items include: Cheez-its, individual packs of crackers, Skittles, M&M’s, and small bags of popcorn. Items with longer expiration dates are preferred to minimize any waste.

We keep these snacks in glass jars so that volunteers can easily grab a pack of crackers or a bag of candy.

1-2 volunteers are needed to help assemble these cards. This activity does require skill as the cards are sometimes sold as fundraisers, so they must meet very high quality standards. Volunteers must be comfortable using a paper-cutter to cut to specific measurements and be comfortable assembling the different parts in a neat and orderly fashion.

A Lovely Landscape for SES
Summerville Elementary School

From 11/19/2021 to 11/19/2021

The new district office of the Dorchester School District Two School System has officially opened on Main Street next to our wonderful school. We are so excited to have these new neighbors and want our campus to look as amazing and welcoming as that of our next-door neighbors.

From the brick-lined flower box that sits on the front sidewalk leading to our school, to the walkway that leads to our quaint front door, to the lovely picnic area by the path to the cafeteria, to the Dr. Gene Sires Learning Garden, to the plant beds that sit beside the second and third grade building, and ultimately to our Kindergarten playground where our littlest Sea Turtles play, there are many places on our campus that need some love and attention in order to make our historic campus look as inviting, beautiful and unique on the outside as the hearts and spirits of the students and staff that live and work on the inside.

We are respectfully asking that the team of volunteers that join us for our Day of Caring adventure on November 19th consider completing the following landscaping projects:

-adding flowers, greenery and pine straw to the brick-lined flower bed outside the front gate of our school

-adding flowers, plants, shrubbery and/or greenery, as well as pine straw to the plant beds that sit on the perimeter of both sides of the sidewalk leading to the front door of our school

-trimming the plants that currently surround the pond in the picnic area of our school to make room for additional flowers and plants to enhance the beauty of this space

-redoing/replanting the window boxes and flower pots in the Dr. Eugene Sires Learning Garden, as well as adding pieces of grass or ground cover to surround the roots of the nice trees in this garden

-adding plants and shrubbery to the beds beside the second and third grade building (also known as the "back" building of SES

-refreshing the Kindergarten playground, trimming tree branches and vines so that the students may move freely without running into obstacles. Two years ago the volunteers that joined us on the Day of Caring planted small evergreen trees by the part of the playground fence that faces the car rider line at the back of the school. We would love for additional evergreens to be planted by another part of the fence that faces the homes on Richland Avenue that back up the playground. There are several old, shaky benches that sit on the porch by the playground that could use replacing. Two or three nice, reasonably priced benches where students and teachers could sit and enjoy time together would be delightful.

-(This would be a bonus request!) Our fourth grade teachers suggested refreshing the green space that "sits" in the horseshoe parking lot of SES, possibly adding one or two stone walkways across the space to blend the beauty of the new district office's parking lot with our parking lot.

We understand that our requests are mighty and expensive, and we will be grateful for any projects that can be accomplished on November 19th. Our first priority would be the refreshing and updating our Kindergarten playground, and anything else would be greatly appreciated!
