Charleston Habitat - PM shift
Charleston Habitat for Humanity

From 11/17/2021 to 11/17/2021

Day of Caring volunteers will be helping to build a home for a deserving family in Charleston, located in the East Side Community (29403). Alexandra has lived in Charleston for over 15 years. She is a yoga instructor at Mission Yoga and works with Charleston County Schools and Empowered Minds, a local nonprofit. Alexandra is raising her three-year-old son, Forrest, who was born without limbs. Forrest has a robotic chair, but is unable to use it in their apartment because the hallways aren't wide enough nor is it handicap accessible. To Alexandra, being a homeowner means the ability to root in place. "With Forrest," she says, "so much is uncertain that the sureness of a stable home would at least set some of those other concerns aside." It also means that part of the financial burden will be lifted so she can focus less on taking every job in order to pay the bills, and more on maximizing her time with Forrest.

No prior construction experience is needed! Our crew will provide detailed instructions for each task that day, including the use of any tools/power tools. Volunteers can participate in a half day shift or full day. The morning shift is from 8:30AM-12:00PM and the afternoon shift is from 12:30-4:00PM, with a break from 12:00-12:30PM. All volunteers should report to the Construction Site at 26 Reid Street for welcome and instructions. For parking there are some street spots available but we also recommend carpooling. Questions? Please contact: Kinsey Clark, Volunteer Coordinator Kinsey@charlestonhabitat.org 843-203-4022

Foster Family Basket Drive for Closet of Hope (Remote)
Closet of Hope

From 10/18/2021 to 11/19/2021

For the upcoming season to be thankful, the team at Closet of Hope is thankful for foster families. The entire COH team sees how hard these foster parents work, how much they change their life, and the pain that they encounter because of being a foster parent.

We want a way to just say thanks to these amazing people in our community.

Foster family baskets are a way to just supply a few household items for the entire family as a small token of our appreciation. Each basket can be a laundry basket, with a few items inside such as laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, and other household items along these lines.

This may seem like a small thing to do for another person, but some of these families have more than 10 children in their homes and a small gift of this nature, can help just take a little bit of pressure off of them.

Toy Drive for Closet of Hope (Remote)
Closet of Hope

From 10/18/2021 to 12/08/2021

Partner with Closet of Hope to raise awareness to the foster care system and support a child in foster care! Closet of Hope focuses on supporting children that are involved with DSS through tangible items. The toy drive last year supported over 300 children in the Lowcountry area. This helps ensure that these children are able to have a happy holiday.

How it works: Our annual toy drive will be held on December 10th and 11th. Foster parents will sign their child up in advance and then be able to come to Church of Cane Bay. All of the toys will be out for display at this time and the person shopping selects the toys that the child would enjoy the most. There is a point system to ensure fairness for all foster families throughout the event. All donations would need to be received by December 8th for processing!

Fields to Families Moncks Corner Garden Day of Caring Virtual Wishlist (Remote)
Fields to Families

From 10/14/2021 to 11/19/2021

Fields to Families gives produce to programs feeding the community by coordinating volunteers with farmers for the collection and distribution of fruits, vegetables and eggs.

Fields to Families believes that every person deserves access to healthy food choices, no matter their circumstances. The organization helps combat hunger by bridging the gap between local farmers and the food insecure.

Volunteers are coordinated, provided resources and guidance for cleaning, growing and giving produce received by food donor. The organization's methods allow for donated produce to be strategically collected and dispursed at no cost to the community partners. Activities are offered throughout the year in the organization's Moncks Corner Community Garden. They include growing seasonal crops from seed to harvest, building and constructing, raising honey bee hives and a sprout house.

Collect Cardboard for our Pollinators! (Remote)
Keep North Charleston Beautiful Coalition

From 10/14/2021 to 11/19/2021

Keep North Charleston Beautiful uses sheets of cardboard as a natural, compostable weed barrier in gardens. This allows us to cover weeds in the gardens in a way that does not harm the pollinators. Cutting down the cardboard into smaller pieces prior to any volunteer activities allows volunteers to work more efficiently during workdays.

We need volunteers to collect cardboard and cut it down into smaller pieces for us to use in the gardens. The smaller pieces will then be bagged up and need to be delivered to the KNCB office (located in the Felix Davis Community Center at 4800 Park Circle, North Charleston, SC 29405).

(Instructions for cutting down cardboard will be provided to any volunteers participating in this opportunity.)

Favorite items include: Cheez-its, individual packs of crackers, Skittles, M&M’s, and small bags of popcorn. Items with longer expiration dates are preferred to minimize any waste.

Please note that we are now requiring that all volunteers serving inside be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Below you’ll find a brief summary of the different jobs we have to offer:

  • Serving Meals– Every Monday- Thursday from 10:30- 12:30, we serve hot meals to our neighbors in our dining room.
  • Emergency Grocery Distribution-Every Wednesday, as well as the Second Saturday of the month, we pass out food, diapers, personal hygiene, and clothes to our clients in a socially distant walk up or contact free car line.
  • Kitchen– In order to serve our daily meals, a hard working crew cooks all the food that is given to our clients later in the week in a smaller, low contact group.
